The Language of blood in is vague for life

A drop of blood, such a small thing, can tell you so much about yourself (the language of blood). What’s in your body, from the excess to what you lack and from the sufficient amount to the insufficient, can tell you how healthy or sick you are. So, when your blood tells you something, you better listen to it.

There are people who speak this language of blood, better known as laboratory technologists. They are the medium through which this communication can occur.

The blood that you give to the phlebotomist in the lab is first divided into different containers depending on the tests required. Some tests require the blood to be clotted to centrifuge and separate the serum substance of the blood that is used to test for cholesterol, contents of the liver, renal, thyroid, and further for screening such as HIV, HBsAg, HCV, syphilis, and many more.

Others require the blood to be whole, to check for their hemoglobin amount, the platelets, red blood cell indices, and blood grouping. Tests such as blood sugar level and coagulation profile require preservatives to be added to the blood hence the need for different tubes.

The tests are run by the technologist and results are correlated to issue a blood report that assesses the condition of your body. Each test has a range to which the results should fit in, hence the results are often highlighted if it is below or above the range.

Any disorder in the functioning of an organ, the marker in your body gives an indication, and flags are raised in the blood reports. If you have an elevated blood sugar level in the blood, could be due to diabetes, or if an HBsAg screening results came as positive you probably have hepatitis, most of all, if a high level of CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) is found in the blood, it gives an indication of cancer.

All these and more can be determined from a blood report which needs to be examined by the doctors. Delay in listening to what your blood tells you, could end up being fatal.
