Obesity

Obesity is not a new topic, it is a common word we often hear. But did you know that obesity can reduce blood flow to the brain. Which could lead to vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.   Reduced blood flow in the brain (Cerebral hypoperfusion), is an early mechanism in these two disease. Did you know these facts about obesity?

One study showed that increase physical activity can positively modify these reduction in brain blood flow. Researchers investigated 3 different measures of obesity in adult over 50 years including body mass index (BMI), waist to hit ratio and physical activity. They then measured brain blood flow using MRI.

The findings reveal that been overweight or obese is associated with reduced blood flow to the brain. They also found that the waist size increase of 1 centimeter (0.4 inch) is associated with the same reduced brain flow. Furthermore, they found that higher level of physical activities modify the association between reduced brain blood flow and being obese.

being active

Researchers recommend at least 1.5 to 2 hours of being active throughout the day. Which could be a lot if you are not an active person. Hence engaging in activities that require moderate efforts such as fast walking or cycling is advisable. Consistent blood supply to the brain is critical for our health. It ensures that the brain is provided with enough oxygen. And nutrients to function correctly.
