125000 Tourists a new record in the Maldives

Compared to May 2019, May 2022 has brought about a new record in the history of Maldives tourism with an increase of 125000 tourists a new record. The tourism ministry has clarified that about 103,000 tourists visited the Maldives in May 2019.

According to tourism minister Dr.Abdullah Mausoom, the increase of tourists this month compared to 2019 is due to the increase of tourists from all the destinations as well. He stated that the number of tourists from India, Saudi Arabia, and America has considerably increased.

As of now, India is in the first position among the countries from which most tourists visit the Maldives. While England is considered the second country, Russia seems to be in the third position. Until the month of March since the start of this year, Russia was the most tourist visited country but since the start of the war in Russia, tourist visitation has decreased noticeably.

Minister Mausoom told that usually these months are noticed to have less tourist visitation, however, the situation seems to have started to change now.

Minister further stressed that the current condition with the Russia -Ukraine ongoing war, where the world’s economy is badly affected, this increase in the tourists and the new record in the Maldives is contentment for him and that once the situation across the world gets better he expects the Maldives tourism to expand.

Up until now, a tourist count of 680,000 has visited the Maldives this year from January to May, which is 6% less compared to the 2019 count of 730,000 tourists in the first 5 months.

Last year 1.3 million tourists visited the Maldives. The government’s objective is to bring 1.6 million tourists this year. 125000 tourists a new record that we will witness this month.
